Gmail app icon on iPhone home screen no longer shows number of unread emails

The Gmail app icon on my iPhone Xs home screen no longer shows the number of unread emails within my Gmail Inbox.

It used to show this number of unread emails up until two weeks ago.

I have already uninstalled and reinstalled the Gmail app on my iPhone but this hasn't fixed the issue.

What can I do to restore this setting so the Gmail app on my iPhone home screen will once again display a circle with the number of unread emails within my Gmail Inbox?

Do this to fix the issue:

Open Gmail App

click on three horizontal lines at top

scroll down and click Settings

look for your email account at top and click

(if you have multiple gmail accounts, make sure you are considering the primary account)

Scroll down and look for Notifications

and make sure it is enabled for your primary account.
