To zoom, use the Ken Burns effect that you access from the crop button:
Here's a help link that explains how to use the Ken Burns effect:

Oh. You mean "expanding" the timeline. "Zoom" means something else, as you actually described in your initial post, but I didn't pick up on.
I have always used the slider above the timeline to the right to expand the timeline.
Anyway, glad you got it working.
Best,
Rich
Yeah, you're right. Never noticed that. I have always seen folks use "expand" rather than "zoom" to describe the timeline expansion. But I guess Apple is entitled to its own terminology.
I would think that a more accurate description of a "zoom" of the timeline would be what you get with the Clip Size adjustment slider that shows in the dialogue box when you click on the Settings button above and to the right of the timeline. Although even there one would not be narrowing the field of view. Oh, well. I think that Apple's use of "zoom" gets the idea across.

That's a sensible name, but Apple calls it zoom.
Thanks, but not that zoom. The timeline zoom by Cmd+ and -.
It worked fine until I dragged 90 images in. Maybe there's a limit.
I gave up and restarted the project and it zoomed as usual.
