Apple News

Has anyone else noticed the changes in the basic Apple News app? It now appears that, in addition to the subscription-only Apple News+, nearly every “story” or “article” is nothing more than a link to another subscription-only news service. To subscribe to several of the best ones would cost $100s per month. I’m not in a position to pay for Apple News+, so I no long rely on the Apple News app sources for news.

This is the way the newer Apple News app has worked since sometime in iOS 11 or 12 when Apple purchase the app called Texture.

The new Apple News app will let you read the Headline stories, but not much else, unless you pay for either a monthly Apple news subscription and/or pay those news apps which ask for a seperate, monthly news subscription within the new Apple News app.

This is how it is now for the new Apple News app.

There are alternatives to the Apple News app that I have been using for a few years, now.

SmartNews and/or Flipboard.

So basically, this is a return of the attitude Apple presented in the late 80's and early 90's - if you can't afford it, you shouldn't have bought an Apple. It's also an attitude that very nearly wiped out the company. I know that Apple is not responsible for other news sources going subscription-only, but as a retired person, on a fixed income, with costs & rent going up much faster than the C.O.L. for S.S., I don't subscribe to anything I don't need - I can't.

It is what it is.

Monthly subscription pay models are for even apps, now, and is the only way the software and news industries can stay viable and survive!

Apple did this to help the dwindling of paid print subscribers to print magazines and newspaper businesses.

The paid monthly “software rental” model is keeping software developers alive and viable.

These industries, like any other industry, cost money to run and support!

There are one-time pay, low cost or free news app alternatives to get your news online and for your iPad.

I only mentioned the two I use.

Search the IOS App Store for News apps that aggregated all news or use Google or Yahoo news in a Web browser or by using their dedicated apps.
