When I open my MacBook Pro there’s a flashing question mark icon. I have followed some advice on Apple Support by selecting Disk Utility but unfortunately the Repair Disk is not lit and therefore cannot be selected. I‘d like to know how to back up files?

Also, how do I reinstall OS X on my MacBook Pro while keeping my files and user settings? Is the OS X Mountain Lion disk normally supplied or can I purchase one? Thank you!

MacBook Pro 13″, OS X 10.10

You are past the point of backing up. You cannot boot the computer nor can you boot from the Recovery Volume. Mountain Lion is still available from the Apple Store. Purchase a redemption code at the Online Apple Store: OS X Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. Use the code to redeem a download of Mountain Lion from the App Store.

If Mountain Lion was the original version of OS X that came pre-installed from the factory, then it's possible that version was a special build. The retail version may not work on your computer.

To recover your files would require removing the HDD from the computer and putting it in an external USB enclosure that you can connect to another Mac.
