If I connect my iPad 4th generation to the MacbookPro 2020 with Catalina 10.15.6 directly via USB-C cable, everything works well: the iPad shows in the finder.
If I do the same, but I plug the usb-c cable in the Apple Multiport adapter (last generation), nothing happens.
Any idea what is going on?

So, it think I found out what is was. On the one hand, QuickPost was right on the fact that the usb-c port on the AV Multiport Adapter’s USB-C is for chargin only. On the other hand, I found out that my two (two!) usb-c to usb-a cables were both charge only!!! (!!!)
After a few tests, I got out to buy a new cable with data transfer, and things start working - still not perfect (the ipad is mounted and unmounted repeatedly) but this is a different problem.

However, the issue persists even when using the usb port of the adapter. I also tried connecting the ipad via a usb hub, without success. I don't think it is a matter of adapter (the usb port works fine) but somewhere in the detection of the ipad when behind an adapter.

Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter’s USB-C port is strictly used for charging iPad. It does not contain any data transfer circuitry.
