Old phone not transferring to new phone

I had to buy a new phone; I'm trying to set it up but when I try to transfer my stuff from my old phone it always says Unable to Complete Data Transfer - It says that my connection to my old phone was lost. Could it be that my old phone just won't do the transfer and I have to take the loss?
