Viewing files Sparsebundle

Hi,

I have a backup of around 200GB in timemachine sparsebundle. When the backup took place, the machine was encrypted and I never gave much attention to encryption - decryption.

Now when I double click my sparsebundle, it mounts and shows the .inProgress file.

Now the bands in the sparsebundle are around 200 GB as I already mentioned, but the .inProgress shows only 1.35GB. I opened the Show Package Contents in the .inProgress file, there is just one folder which contains another folder which was my original disk name in the previous mac - Name: MacHD - Data.

MacHD-Data is greyed out. .inProgress in stuck at 1.35GB's. I'm I doing something wrong? How do I get access to the 200GB's?

I'm using macOS Catalina, APFS filesystem.

Thanks in advance for any help

You shouldn't "open" the sparse bundle. When you double-click, it should mount like a hard drive.

You can do nothing with it as you see it.

While it is actually a folder, it should be "packaged" to act like a file. If it looks and acts like a folder, it is broken.

Ctrl-click on it and choose Open With > Other.

Look for DiskImageMounter in /System/Library/CoreServices/ and try to open it with that.

That may not work if Finder thinks it is a folder and not a sparse bundle disk image.

If that doesn't work, you may be able to drag the sparse bundle onto the DiskImageMounter application. If it highlights when you drag it onto the app, let go and it should mount it.

The .inProgress shows 1.35GB data. Its been like that for a long time. What should I do next?

As I tried to explain before, and as Boyd Porter pointed out, you shouldn't use it for anything except maybe getting newer version of a file that doesn't exist in the most recent date-stamped folder.

It is not a full backup and never will be.

Boyd Porter also brings up a good point. Why are you viewing this backup in the Finder and not the Time Machine interface?

A sparse bundle disk image does not release the space freed up when deleting files from the bundle. You can shrink it (which I imagine TM does periodically), but the size of the bundle does not necessarily reflect the data stored within it.

The .InProgress folder is not a complete backup. It is the backup that was in the process of being backed up, so it may not have the full backup in it.

You should be looking for files in the most recent dated folder, or use the alias named, "Latest."
