Macbook display only works when plugged into HDMI
My Screen works perfectly when HDMI is connected to a TV, the TV does not need to be powered on. When HDMI is disconnected the screen is a mess of colors

It sounds like you have an issue where your display only works when you have an HDMI cable plugged in. Check out this link for some support when your Mac display doesn't look right.
