We have just purchased apple TV HD 64g set it up but how do I download all my photos and music so it streams on my TV without our computer being turned on?

Apple TV is a streaming only device, with the storage only used for apps. If you don't want to use home sharing (which requires a computer being on) then you would need to use iCloud Photos and Apple Music (or iTunes Match if you just want to have your personal library available) so it can be streamed directly from the cloud.

Another option is to store your photos in an online photo service like Flickr ($40 per year for unlimited storage) and then load the Flickr app on your Apple TV. I have been using this option the past 2 years and love it.
