How do I get my files from my hard drive into appropriate folders?

I trsnsferred my files from a backup drive

to my new Mac air. I can't free them to put them into different folders. They seem frozen in "recent".

”Recent” is not an actual storage location, they are just pointers to the files that you’ve accessed/opened recently, wherever they are actually stored on your drive.

You need to look in your home folder (or wherever you put the files when you copied them off the external drive), and sort them how you want them. They will still show up in recent (until you’ve accessed other files more recently).
