Text tone doesn't work when phone is on ring?

I have always had my text tones off, and put specific text ring tones for certain people. Recently, whenever those certain people text me, their specific text tone doesn't work. When I go to my settings, and turn the text noise on for every text, it works then. I'm confused because like i said, I have always turned off noises for everyone's text besides those specific people.
