Unable to enter Apple ID verification code

In IPad, when signing in to iCloud I am prompted for username and password, I enter that no problem. Then I am prompted to enter a verification code that was sent to my IPhone. The box to enter the code appears on the iPad but I am not able to enter the digits- the box does not highlight so I can plug in the code. Any ideas?

Also worth noting that I recently changed my Apple ID password as a security measure because I had random reminder alerts pop up- reminders I did not set (I keep Siri off) so that rules o it an accidental reminder being set up by Siri).
