QuickTime Player cannot record...try recording again!

A week ago i could make a new audio recording using quicktime player. I was pleased that it worked seamlessly. Today I get a message "cannot record. Try recording again." I have tried for over an hour and read everything about this issue...not much there. Please help! I need this to work and am out of time and patience.
