I couldn’t update apps because it asked for the password for my new Apple ID, but only accepted the password for the old Apple ID. I think the apps that I first downloaded on the old Apple ID are still connected to it and I don’t know how to move them under my new account without deleting and re-downloading all the apps.

You cannot transfer your purchase history to another AppleID. You will have to delete those apps and buy them again with your new AppleID. Purchases are forever tied to the AppleID that makes the purchase.

You can try setting up Family Sharing between the IDs if you want to be able to share purchases made with the IDs.
