New message notification, but no message

Last week and again this morning my messages are showing an unread/new message notification, however when I go to my list there are none. Not in the main list nor unknown senders.

Last week I needed to message somebody I had not contacted before and when I did the message then showed up above mine as the unread message was from them.

Why are they not displaying?
