I have an album which I wish to share with others. Advice said to create a new shared album and then move the images to the new one. The problem is that the new shared album scrambles the carefully curated order into some completely different order which has no obvious logic or way of re-ordering back to the original. How can I transfer the images and keep the original order?

Select the album in the left pane, then CMD+a, or click.CMD click on the ones you want to share, then the Share icon...
That works, thank you. Before I created the shared album then dragged all the pics in the album which lost the order - doing it the other way round works great.
One other question; It appears not possible to change the order of the images by dragging them to the desired position in a shared album even one created by me. Is that right or have I missed something?
Tks but No. there is no Select tab in the top right. Thus no Select all. There is a drop down to ICloud share in the menu bar above but no apparent way of selecting the photos or the whole album
