Email error messages

After years of use, this suddenly happened.

  • Trying to send an email.
  • Error message:
    • "Online Status. Connections to host Automatically added for iOS & OS X Mail on the default ports failed."

  • Mail Preferences > Server Setting > Incoming and Outgoing Mail Server:
    • Host name: "Automatically added for iOS & OS X Mail"
    • "Automatically manage connection settings" - checked
  • Passwords deleted and reentered several times - the password is correct
  • Error message:
    • "Unable to verify account name or password.

I've shut down and restarted without success. Suggestions?

Troubleshooting Apple Mail

What does Mail/Window/Connection Doctor Show? If the server is red, select it and look at the Show Details box.

Mail: Mail troubleshooting

Mail: If you can’t send messages.

Troubleshooting sending email messages

Mail not sending or receiving messages after updating OS X.

Try Mail/Preferences/Accounts/Server Information, then go to Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP). From the drop down menu select Edit SMPT server list. Then set up a server for each mail account so that is associated with the e-mail address. Then go to each account and set that server as the Outgoing Mail Server (SMPT).

As a backup, if you have emails in your account inbox, select the mailbox, then Mail/Mailbox/Export Mailbox, and export the mailbox to your Desktop. Then go to Mail/Preferences/Accounts, select the account, and delete it using the minus sign. Quit/reopen Mail and add the account back. Test. If necessary, to recover missing emails, use Mail/File/Import to import the mailbox on your Desktop. It normal shows in the On My Mac section. Drag emails to the account inbox if desired.
