Time Machine on Catalina 10.15.6 only shows local snapshots

After applying the Catalina 10.15.6 update to my MacBook Pro Retina Mid-2015, Time Machine only shows the local snapshots that are stored on the local disk. The backups do get the the remote disk but are not displayed in the Time Machine UI when you enter Time Machine. The only backups that are displayed are the backups that have been taken since 10.15.6 was applied.

The local backups are being stored over a network to a Time Capsule during the "cleanup phase". The sparse bundle on the Time Capsule, when mounted, does show the new backups since 10.15.6 was applied and every other backup back until the Time Capsule was first setup in 2017.

When Time Machine is activated, all of the local snapshots are retrieved from a "hidden" partition of the main disk and mounted under /Volumes and those are the only backups that are available in the UI.

I never had looked into Time Machine until now when it broke. The behavior that I am seeing makes me think that a change was made to Time Machine for10.15.6 that broke the merging of the local snapshots with the list of backups on the remote disk. My guess is that there is a bug in the code that is removing duplicates between the list of local backups and remote list. It is also appears that, in contrary to the document here, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204015, local snapshots are now being preserved at all costs, regardless of age, so that Time Machine can be used when the laptop is not attached to the remote disk.

As I said earlier, it is appears that there is a bug when Time Machine is attempting to merge the list of local snapshots with the list of backups on the remote disk and the UI code fails, leaving a list of backups that contains only the local snapshots.

I would classify this behavior as a regressive bug introduced with 10.15.6.

TimeMachine is working fine, it is making the backups to your storage device. It is just the User Interface that is broken due to what I suspect is a bug but there is a way to get it to work.

To get the Time Machine UI to work, do these steps first before you open the Time Machine User Interface:

1) open a terminal window

2) at the prompt, type: tmutil listbackups

3) wait until the command finishes

4) open the Time Machine UI and all of your previous backups are visible.

(It is a very easy bug to hit if you are using a Time Capsule or an external drive so I'm very surprised that QA missed it. Apple, did QA even try looking for a backup farther back that twenty four hours before 10.15.6 went out the door?)

The issue persists when MacBook Pro is running in safe mode.  It issue also exists when the backup disk is a remote network share like my Time Capsule or if the backup drive is a USB drive.

I have noticed a change in the symptoms which I ascribe to when I used Time Machine after applying 10.15.6. If I enter directly into Time Machine after a restart, it now only shows the backups taken within the last twenty four hours regardless of the destination. Any backup further back in time is inaccessible through the Time Machine UI.

All of the backups are  listed when 'tmutil listbackups' is executed in a shell. Listing all of the backups also has a beneficial consequence. Once tmutil has listed all of the backups, Time Machine will show all of the backups on the backup drive, whether it is network mounted like a Time Capsule or connected via USB.

I can only conclude that using tmutil at the command line has resulted in the (re)building of the database that Time Machine uses to display the backup.

There is still a regressive bug in Catalina 10.15.6 but there is a cumbersome work around.

Hello donaldfromdarien,

Thanks for stopping by the Apple Support Communities, and sharing details about the issue you're having with Time Machine after updating to 10.15.6, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

Does this behavior persist when using different backup disk like the ones mentioned in the following link?

Backup disks you can use with Time Machine

Let's see if the issue persist in safe mode:

I have a similar problem. After upgrading to Catalina 10.15.6 my Time Machine no longer works. I have tried to unplug, download an updated airport utility, etc. When trying to download the airport utility it said it was not compatible with the OS version on my MacPro. I have this problem on my iMac as well. I am at a loss on what to do. It seems like the last upgrade made the Time Machine obsolete as it seems to be incompatible with the latest Catalina OS version.
