MBP 13 2020 won't recognize USB devices from TB dock after sleeping and connecting to the dock. After unplugging the dock MBP crashes and does SMC reset

Device: MBP 13" 2020 10th gen i5

Catalina 10.15.6

Dock: CalDigit TS3+ with firmware 44.1

I'm not sure if this problem is exclusive to Catalina 10.15.6, but I can't say since my dock arrived after the latest update got shipped and I haven't tried if it works on 10.15.5.

Basically, I unplug the dock at night and put the MBP to sleep. After a few hours of sleep it seems to stop recognizing the USB devices plugged into the dock. The dock has a USB audio interface, a logitech wireless dongle (for G604 mouse), a DP monitor and the power supply for the dock. When I plug it after the mac has been in sleep for hours, the mac won't recognize the audio card and the mouse (just the USB issue we had in previous catalina versions with all kinds of USB hubs and USB devices), but the monitor works and everything has power supplied to it, including the USB devices.

If I then unplug the dock and replug it, often the mac straight-up crashes completely and shuts down, powering on with an error that it recovered from a problem ( it also does an SMC reset).

The error report later states: "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset".

This reddit thread speaks of the exact same issue with a different monitor and some people with different docks:

https://www.reddit.com/r/macbookpro/comments/i0m9si

Basically, what I'm saying is that the original USB issue is not fixed yet and now it's much worse because:

  1. You can't fix the USB problem unless you restart the mac - re-plugging the devices into the dock won't solve it
  2. The macbook directly crashes and does an SMC reset if you unplug/replug the dock, wiping your unsaved data and crashing anything else you might have open at the time

Additional problem: Monitor sometimes doesn't wake up at all after mac is awoken from sleep. At one point the monitor went to sleep WHILE I was using the mac actively.

I have tried NVRAM/SMC resets and they did nothing.

I wrote an email to CalDigit and they confirmed a lot of other users have complained about this:

"Our engineers have been investigating into the brand new 2020 MacBooks as we’ve had detailed reports from several of our customers who have tried many different brands of docks, from OWC, Kensington, Elgato and ours and none of them have been able to function correctly via the latest chipsets in these Macs."

PLEASE FIX the usb/dock/monitor issues already! This is a problem of Apple devices exclusively. This is unacceptable for a laptop at this price from the year 2020. Cheap off-brand laptops do not have such issues with peripherals!!

I've been having this issue w/ my 13" 2020 MBP since I started using it a couple of months ago, with different dock models.

TL;DR

  • Issue reproduced on 2 different 13" 2020 MBPs running 10.15.7, one running a clean macOS install (no additional software installed), w/ 2 different TB docks.
  • 13" 2018 MBP works fine in all of the (same) tested configurations.

Details:

Since I have the benefit of having multiple MBPs and docks to test with, I'm (not that folks here require convincing) incredibly confident this issue isn't due to some people having faulty hardware (e.g. logic board, dock, whatever).

  • I was easily able to reproduce the kernel panic ("Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset") on a freshly installed 13” 2020 MBP (clean macOS installation- zero software installed).
  • This is consistently reproduced w/ 2 different 10.15.7 builds ((19H2 and 19H15 - didn't bother to test 19H4 and/or 10.15.6).
  • 10.15.5 (19F2200) works fine.
  • 11.0.1 (20B50 - didn't test 20B29) works fine.

I tested 2 different setups:

  • OWC TB3 dock, with 2 devices connected to it- Dell U2719DC monitor (DisplayPort) and Logitech K120 USB keyboard:

Same problem here. 2020 MacBook Pro 13" (10th Generation Intel CPUs) running MacOS 10.15.7. I am using a Plugable TBT3-UDV Thunderbolt dock. I can reproduce the problem 100% of the time. Just unplug Thunderbolt cable from Mac, close the Macbook lid for 30 seconds (enough for a light sleep), open the lid, and re-plug Thunderbolt cable. None of the USB devices are recognized, and the Ethernet port is also not recognized. The two displays work perfectly, however. Rebooting the Mac restores USB and Ethernet connectivity. Alternatively, if I try to unplug and re-plug the Thunderbolt cable without performing a restart, the Mac crashes hard with the same error reported above: "Intel CrashLog recorded due to unexpected reset". I have a ticket open with Apple Support.

2020 Macbook Air, Cal digit TS3, same issue. I will NOT stop "reminding" Apple this is STILL occurring. I email them every other day. Which isn;t NEARLY as obnoxious as my new computer crashing or me having to restart 3-4 times a day. Their "standard" email response:

"I can confirm that Apple has received reports of this behavior with the CalDigit TS3 Dock and is investigating. The results of the investigation may come in the form of an update, a knowledge base article, or some combination of the two. Please should be encouraged to keep the macOS up-to-date. We ask for your patience as we continue to investigate these reports."

No, sorry. I will not be patient after MONTHS of the same problem that is crashing my new computer that I need to work. I mean, I can get a PC if I want to deal with these kinds of issues.

KEEP EMAILING. Also, make sure you remind them, IN WRITING, that since they are aware of this issue, and have done nothing to resolve it, you will not be held responsible for problems that may arise as a result of your computer constantly crashing. Inundate them. Squeaky wheels and all....

I literally copy and paste the same thing over and over again. Months ago, I called and reported the problem and asked for senior tech. I did receive a call from a senior tech, who was lovely (but powerless to do anything as he was not an engineer). I was then sent a follow up email from our convo (at my request) which included the ticket/case number. And then I just kept emailing a reply back to that email. I would change the opening (i.e. " I haven't received a response to my query about this issue, which is STILL occurring", or "I am STILL waiting for a resolution to this issue which is STILL crashing my computer", etc) and then copy and paste the issue itself (essentially what I wrote in my original post which you responded to) and then I'd end it with "Apple will be responsible for any and all issues this constant crashing of my new computer causes for the life of this computer." It's irrelevant if they respond or not. As long as you have a written record that you consistently made them aware of the issue that they did NOT fix, you'll be golden.

FWIW I tried out Big Sur Beta a few weeks ago and it didn't help. But I read on reddit of some users saying the latest beta update of Big Sur 11.0 were having some success with the Thunderbolt issue and docking. I figured what the heck, I was on Catalina went to Big Sur, back to Catalina, and yesterday I went back to Big Sur and so far I've gone 3 days with no errors or reboots. There is another update to the beta 11.1 but I'm hesitant to update, as this version has been solid, and has fixed the dock issue.

Excellent news. I'll go ahead and bump up to 11.0.1 (sorry I mistakenly said 11.1 in the previous post. Apologies) Anyway, I too will report how things go. Interesting point on the silent release of Cataline 10.15.7 19H4 I actually liked Big Sur when I originally tried it, I just reverted back (I wish it was that easy) so I could contact support at Elgato, which has been excellent btw. They sent me a tool to run and have been very responsive and helpful.

I have the same issue with the Apple Pro Display XDR and Macbook Pro 13 2020 on Catalina and still the same on the latest Big Sur beta. I have already done NVRAM/SMC resets and I'm just waiting for Big Sur to be released to try it again, before I contact Apple. I also have a MacBook Pro 15 2019 which doesn't have the same issue. So, this is a problem specifically with the Macbook Pro 13 2020 and not third-party docks as I'm only using Apple hardware.

Wow! This even does not work with the Apple Pro Display XDR?!?

Not that it would be an acceptable excuse at all, but given the really limited love Apple had for LG Ultrafine, despite once officially advertising it for the MBP 2016, I sadly was not surprised they do not pay much attention.

However their top of the line ultra expensive pro monitor? Does not work correctly with their top of the line 2020 notebook?? Unbelievable. #OnlyAppleCanDoThat

You conflate my willingness to return this computer and buy an Apple silicon Mac with indifference to whether or not they are held accountable.

They SHOULD be held accountable for this. It’s entirely unacceptable. However, my interest in Apple silicon is not about a potential fix for this. I of course want them to be held accountable and improve the quality of their product. Because net, I like their products, and I want to use better ones.

Still crashes with the latest supplemental update (19H15), doesn’t appear that there are any fixes. I’ve run through the exact steps I’ve sent over to apple support twice with 19H15 and had kernel panic’s both times.

I sent over some very detailed reproduction steps to apple support 2 or so weeks ago with another set of logs. I was told they had some reports of the issue and it was still being investigated.
