Hello yale272,

It looks like you're having an issue updating GarageBand on your Mac, and we'd be happy to look into this with you.

If those apps were originally purchased with that other Apple ID, then you cannot update them with your Apple ID.  You will need to delete them and purchase them with your own Apple ID.

So the best next steps would be to delete this app and then download it again with your Apple ID. From then on, this should update with no issues.

Download apps and games from the App Store

Cheers!

There’s a risk here..I won’t say you try this..if ever you may need to download the newest garage band version in the future or for future use will you download it again? If yes that means you need to have a garage band that is associated with your Apple ID.

You have a project inside your old garage band right..if you can save this to your iclouds all of them ..then you can erase your old garage band and install the new garage band with your OWN Apple ID. You can import them back .

when you open the newly installed garage band. Click “browse” then it will navigate you to iclouds folder. Click the project one by one then it will migrate in garage band apps.

The red check project was my back up in iclouds ..I can recall it again and again by importing it back to garage band apps if the one I’m editing with is messed up. Then if I’m satisfied and I felt Like it’s enough like after 3 yrs still cannot decide the final ending haha (kidding ) then I will upload it to iclouds and place it in a folder.

Okey lets talk about the risk..the Apple iClouds memory is only 5gb so if you have lots project you cannot bring all of them if it’s more than 5gb. .(.if this happen in Mac it’s a different story)

I have the same issue, but in this case it is a new laptop (2020 MacBook Air) that I set up cleanly (no migration assistant, etc). It offers the update but then prevents the update with the same error message. I may have purchased a version of this once before, many years ago, or updated it many years ago via the Apple Store. I haven't used it in many years. This is clearly some sort of bug. I've purchased iWork before, and that didn't interfere with updating with what came on the laptop.

GarageBand cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.

This error message of being "refunded" is typical, if you are still having an old iLive version of GarageBand installed, for example GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5. The old iLife versions can no longer be used on a Mac with Catalina, because they need some 32bit code, that is no longer supported. And there is no update for them, that would make them compatible with the current system. You can trash the old GarageBand version, if it appears crossed out in the Applications folder. See: About GarageBand 6.0.5 compatibility in macOS – Apple Support

On the current system Catalina you need the most recent version of Garage Band 10, version 10.3.5.

You can simply go to the main tab of the AppStore, search for GarageBand, and purchase it for free with your AppleID. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/garageband/id682658836
