ipod hung up at restore

tried to add music to gen 6 ipod and it died. won't restore. appeared dead so i bought a new gen 7. tried to back it up from old ipod on itunes and now it won't work either. tried new cables, different and new computer, etc. both hung up on restore screen, but neither will.

could a software glitch in the old ipod be txferred to new gen 7 via backup?
