My Documents and Desktop became empty all of a sudden

Suddenly all my files disappeared from Documents and Desktop folders.

Strange things are happening. Recently my Apple ID which I was using from 1 year, suddenly stopped existing. Many files were stored in iCloud through this account, which also got lost.

Why is this happening??? This is annoying. How can files disappear on their own?

It appear that somehow the iCloud Drive has been enabled with the option to add the Desktop and Documents folders to it.

Go to the System/AppleID/iCloud/iCloud Drive/Options preference pane and see if Desktop & Documents Folders is checked.

Sometimes the iCloud Drive gets turned on unknowingly when updating the System.
