sort orders in Numbers & multiple column sorting

Using latest versions of MAC/Numbers.

I would like to sort a column in numbers ascending such that e.g '1.1' follows '1' and then '2' follows '1.1'. Numbers clearly implements the scheme that '1.1' follows '2' and not '1'. Is there a workaround?

I tried adding a column. In column 1 are only whole numbers e.g. '1' & '2' and in column 2 it has decimal values e.g. 1.1. When I try to use multiple column sorting to achieve the order in the above paragraph, Numbers do not act on the rule for column 2

Help. thank you.

sorry, just answered my own questions. numbers treats whole numbers differently to decimals. so if I make my whole number in to for example '1.0' instead of '1' then it sorts correctly with other decimals.

Hi marinko,

Welcome to Numbers for Mac!

Tested in Numbers 10.0 with three tables with different formats in Column A (Automatic, Number, Text)

Before sorting ascending:

After sorting each table ascending by column A:

-1 has come to the top in the Text table.

Perhaps your cells are formatted as Text?

Select those cells and Format Panel > Cell > Data Format > Automatic or Number.

Regards and Happy Numbering!

Ian.
