Touchbar displays static BUT touch STILL WORKS?

Hi all,

My touchbar DISPLAY recently stopped working, and went to static (an unmoving static, not like snow on a TV). Just this pixelated random image.

The touch function of the bar is STILL working however, and if I have the locations of the buttons memorized enough that i can still raise/lower volume, brightness, etc.

I've tried the usual fixes of restarts, SMC, even restarting the touchbar from the Terminal (assuming I did all of this correctly) with no success.

Should it be interesting, upon restarting the computer, the bar goes to black, and the static returns over a minute or two, starting with just intermittent green pixels and then the full static fades in.

My money is on a loose ribbon cable, but I really don't want to tear that far down unless I have to.

This is a 2018 Macbook Pro running Catalina.

Anyone else have this experience or ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Whereisnomad,

We understand your Touch Bar is unable to display images properly, but the touch responses are still working and you're seeing a static image.

Given the steps you've already taken to this point it would be best to bring your Mac into a local Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for further evaluation as it does sound like there's likely a hardware issue present here. For help with locating a service provider in your area, check out: Find Locations - Location Selector
