iTunes purchases have negative decibels

Why does my purchased mysic have negative decibels? Soundcheck is off yet the volume to a lot of purchased is set with negative decibels. Regardless of what I do with soundcheck, it still shows the music file to have negative decibels. Is this supposed to happen or is there a fault somewhere? If so, how do I fix it?

Hashmat,

SoundCheck affects the playback, but does not modify the file itself. So that "volume" value will still be the same.

If you really want to normalize the level in the files themselves, you can use a 3rd party tool such as iVolume.

Hashmat,

The iTunes Store does not "lower the volume." When a track is added to your library, it gets analyzed and that so-called volume level is stored. It doesn't matter if it came from the Store or another source.

if you have a variety of styles in your library you may notice that styles that are mixed "hotter," such as EDM, will have large negative numbers, while classical (for example) tracks will have lower negative numbers or even small positive numbers.

As mentioned earlier, iTunes does not modify the volume of the audio file. That only happens on playback, and if it is not desired can be turned off in SoundCheck.

But why does the file have a negative value at all? When I have purchased music, why does iTunes "edit" so as to lower the volume? Does this mean if I play it on my phone which syncs the song, the music will purposefully lower the volume? Seems dumb and unnecessarily intrusive. It seems like with Google Play shutting down, and iTunes tampering with files, that one must resort to illegal piracy to find good and raw quality music. Jesus!
