Apple Watch no longer covered by Apple Care Warranty

I have an Apple watch. The glass case popped up open. I taped it back. Watch worked. Got an appointment with Apple. Was told no repair fees if no water damage found. No water damage found. Apple will neither fix nor replace the watch. Why? Watch no longer covered by Apple Care Warranty. Cost $229!!

How could that be? Was going to upgrade my phone. (Not anymore) Wanted a McBook Pro (I have an Air). Could anyone advise me on a good phone? Samsung? A computer? Lonovo?

Is the watch more than a year old? If it is, unless you purchased AppleCare+, it's not covered by warranty anymore.
