Colors/contrast look wrong in final cut

Hi

I have imported a h.264 file into final cut pro 10.4.8. The colors and contrast looks wrong, and after exporting the file, the exported file also has wrong colors compared to the original file (this does not happen in any other software i have, like davinci resolve).

Here's a screen shot of the original file in quick time next to the file imported into final cut. As you see, the colors in final cut are wrong.

what display profile are you using on your Macbook? There is a Rec 709 profile in there somewhere but you have to look for it. Uncheck the 'only profiles for this screen' and you'll see it in there. Try that and compare it.

I bought a screen calibrator (The i1Display Pro ) and calibrated my laptop screen, external monitor and the 4k screen I use which creates a custom profile for my monitors and I don't have the problem.

It's been a while since I didn't have the calibrator but I think I got great results from using just the Rec 709 display profile.

Resolve really should not have anything to do with this as far as i know. I just provided the information because you asked where the file comes from and what settings. I am comparing the exported file from Resolve (which is the one i am calling the original. This is how it’s supposed to look like) with how the file looks after i imported it into final cut. And it look wrong (also after exporting from final cut). The export from FCP looks the same as the monitor inside FCP. The problem is with the distorted color/contrast when i import it into FCP, as far as i can understand.

Here are the settings in FCP:

Ok. Now I understand.

What you are seeing is the Gamma Shift issue when exporting from Resolve. This is a common issue. Just do a web search for it and you'll see dozens of articles and people talking about it.

As it was explained to me it's something like Resolve bypasses your display settings for a 'pure' Rec 709 Gamma 2.4 - Here's what you need to do in Resolve to fix this:

In Resolve preferences make sure that in GENERAL the 'use mac display profiles for viewers' is turned off:

THEN when you are getting ready to export you need to check your settings and look for GAMMA TAG and change it to Rec 709 like this:

Do that and try again. I think that will solve your issue.

Thank you. Now, after using the new gamma tag it looks the same in quick time and FCP.

This might not be the right forum to ask about this, but you seem knowledgable about resolve too. So i want to ask you this: Now it still looks different inside of resolve compared to the new export / FCP. Is there a way to make the video look the same inside of Resolve, so that I can accurately grade the film before sending it to FCP? the 'use mac display profiles for viewers' was already turned off. As it is now, my grade in Resolve is useless because the look changes on export.
