'Loved' songs showing as unloved after iTunes match

All of my MP3 and CD music collection is on my iTunes account. So I was delighted to discover iTunes Match, as I was terrified of losing my music.

After setting it up, though, the 'loved' hearts are missing from my most loved tracks - apart from the CDs directly downloaded to my laptop.

This may seem like a petty complaint but I've spent years building up my 'loved' library - it has literally been a labour of love. Now it has gone, which is annoying. Can I get it back or do I have to start all over again? (it took 4 years!!)

Take your computer temporarily offline. Use the shift-start iTunes method to access an older (pre-iTunes Match) version of your library database in the Previous iTunes Libraries folder. Create a smart playlist with the rule Love is Loved. Select the items in the list and copy to a new regular playlist. Export this playlist to an XML file. Close iTunes, revert to your original library and go back online. Import your XML playlist. Select all in the list and set Love to Loved.

Gosh, that's a long way back. Just had a poke around and it does seem to be that these aren't be created as often as they used to be which is a shame. Any .tmp files hiding in your iTunes folder, or a backup? Sometimes hidden .tmp files in the iTunes folder will capture the state of the library at a point in the past. They may be copies of the .itl file or one of the other support files, size would indicate which might be worth renaming and opening to see what it contains.

If you access them by double-clicking on them then you open the current library, not the selected file. You must use the hold-down-shift as you start iTunes method, then click Choose.

If you're still connected to the Internet and iCloud Music Library (aka Sync Library) is active then as soon as you open any library it is likely to be updated to reflect the current state of the iCloud Music Library.

Hey there Muse_75,

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're missing songs that were 'loved' after subscribing to iTunes Match. We will do what we can to help.

Do you have the 'loved' icon showing correctly on your other devices? After you subscribe, iTunes Match automatically scans your music library for matches which may have caused this. Did iTunes Match finish scanning your library?

Cheers.

Hi,

Thanks for your response. The songs are still there - everything matched - that part went really well.

What's missing is the love hearts next to most of my favourite songs (apart from CDs I'd directly downloaded). On my iPhone I can't see any 'loved' icons at all, which I'm not too worried about as I usually use my laptop.

I'm presuming I just have to start adding the loved icon again? It's quite a big task as I have over 8000 songs in my library.

As I say, not the worst thing that could've happened but a bit frustrating.
