I’m trying to connect my iphone to macbook air using lightning to hdmi cable but I get nothing on my mac when I connect it

You cannot connect via HDMI (which is only output on a Mac, anyway). You need to use a lightning to USB cable.

Both the Lightning-to-HDMI adapter for your iPhone and the HDMI port on your MacBook are outputs. Both are talking but neither is listening!
