Why does my brand new MacBook Pro say it needs a battery replacement and is not charging?

I just bought a new Mac today and it is saying when I check the battery that it’s condition is replace now and won’t charge.

MacBook Pro 13”, macOS 10.14

As I type this on my 2019 16" MBP, there are 4 other Apple notebooks on my desk ranging from a 2008 13" unibody MB to a 2020 13" MBP. All of them work fine, only service every needed were battery replacements on the 2008 MB and a 2011 17" MBP, both after several years which is normal for Li-based batteries. That's just the desk – there are two MacBook Airs in the house, along with more iPads and iPhones than I have fingers, all working flawlessly. I hope others read this and it supports making wise decisions before choosing a brand.
