Kernel Panic on Mac Pro 5.1

Hi!

For a while I have had problems with kernel panic. Almost every time I start my computer it gets a kernel panic after around 15-30 minutes. Then it runs like no problem for hours/days. But every time I shut it down and start it up, its freezes and restarts again. I just reinstalled Mojave 10.14.6 on a new SSD. The kernel panic is still there. I will be very helpful if anyone can help! Here is the report:

Mac Pro, macOS 10.14

Hi! I think this solved it! The Northbridge was wiggly (the plastic screw under the cpu had melted).

I followed your link. Here is a short of what I did if anybody with the same problem finds this thread.

0.5 Download Istat Menus and see if the I/O Hub Tiode is very hot. If it is, feel if the Northbridge is loose.

1 - I removed the CPU heatsink. (one turn at each screw, then over to next screw until all where loose.)

2 - I dragged the plastic screw out with a wrench (not sure this is the way to do it, but it worked fine.(

3 - I removed the thermal compound with ArcticClean thermal remover (couldn't get it all away though). Also read that alcohol will work.

4 - I attached new thermal paste.

5 - I screwed back the Northbridge with metal screws (just found some that fitted kinda good from the garage, there are probably some that works better...)

6- Gently screwed back the heatsink on the CPU. One turn at each screw until they started to tighten)

7 - Computer wouldn't start...

8 - I screwed the CPU heatsink gently tighter. (be careful, but I was a bit careful at first, that's why it didn't start). Better to be too careful and just tighten a little more until it starts than go all in and risking breaking your CPU.

9 - Done! Works great again. Now 75 Celsius instead of 128(!).

That is a multi-processor cooperation problem, possibly including the graphics processor as one of the processors.

It occurred or was detected in the Wi-Fi/Airport daemon.

Named extensions present at the "scene of the crime" include Airport extensions.

Third-party extensions shown are the very invasive and resource-hogging dropbox extension. If you need dropbox, I advise running it only on demand. It is not a Mac-native Application, and hogs resources incessantly checking your local files and the files stored on the network for updates.

Possible mechanism: Dropbox may increase traffic enough that the underlying problem in your airport are exposed.

¿are you running any Third-Party cleaners, virus scanners, speeder-uppers, or App removers? They are, without exception, junk. The only ones that should be tolerated is malwarebytes or ClamXAV, because they scan only on demand.

In this model there is also one possible side issue, called Wiggly Northbridge. power off, slide out the processor shelf, find this part, and wiggle it. If it is wiggly, it needs to be fixed. if it is fairly solid (it is spring mounted) then this is not an issue and you can proceed.

Dual 3.07 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon (Xeon(R)) CPU: 6-core

48 RAM - At maximum

DIMM 1 - 8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333

DIMM 2 - 8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333

DIMM 3 - 8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333

DIMM 4 - Empty

DIMM 5 - 8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333

DIMM 6 - Empty

DIMM 7 - 8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333

DIMM 8 - 8 GB DDR3 ECC 1333

Your Mac Pro provides highest RAM performance with matched-size triples, installed in the first three slots on each side. Slots 3&4 and 7&8 are shared, and may operate more slowly under certain conditions.

If slot 6 is not actually empty, its DIMM has failed, and that DIMM should be removed. The DIMM is slot 8 should be moved into slot 6.

This is merely a random observation, likely NOT related to your issues.

Thanks!

I quit Dropbox and just use it when it is needed for now on. Also uninstalled Anti Virus. Im planning on changing my wifi/bluetooth card to a 4.0 so I can use AirDrop, I have an older one right now. Could this help?

I just ran a benchmark-test and the computer crashed when testing my graphic card (RX580). Could this has anything to do with the restarting issue as well?

That is a great machine!

It could be. It looks like crashing occurs on heavy graphic intensive jobs? Do you have a metal replacement graphic card?

Recommendation for minor improvement: For best performance, Apple recommends you to install RAM DIMMs in the order 1, 2, 3 and 5, 6, 7. Currently Slot 5 is empty.
