MacBook Pro trackpad and keyboard are unresponsive.

Hello everyone,

I have an early 2015 model 13” MacBook Pro and both the trackpad and keyboard have suddenly stopped working. For about a month, I have been unable to type or move the mouse using the MacBook’s hardware. I have reset both the SMC and the NVRAM on the computer; this corrected the problem at first, but now the issue persists. There were no previous issues with the computer, and this problem seemingly appear over night.

I contacted Apple Support and learned that it would cost over $500.00 to fix a 5 year old computer due to it being out of warranty coverage. The agent informed me that there is a program through Apple that fixes this problem, but, unfortunately, my model is not listed despite a simple Google search showing literally thousands of others who own the same model computer and are experiencing the same problems (on Apple’s forums nonetheless).

From what I have read, this issue seems to be stemming from the trackpad cable, and replacing this part has solved the vast majority of cases. The cable runs for less than $20 on Amazon and can be replaced in about a half hour according to online videos working on the exact same model.

Does anyone else have this issue regarding their MacBook and/or have you tried to fix the computer using this method? I am a fan of Apple products and used them for several years, but I just cannot justify spending over $500 to fix a 5 year old computer. It is also unsettling that this company, which has a documented hardware problem that has impacted so many other users, refuses to recognize such a failure.

Hold down Shift+Control+Option and the Power button at the same time. Release the keys and look to see if the MagSafe adapter briefly changes color. If it does, the SMC reset has worked. Reboot your Mac and test the trackpad.

The problem is FIXED! I was able to complete the repair myself using a new trackpad cable and two screwdrivers. All together, it cost me about ~$20 to do the work and 20 minutes worth of time. There are several videos on YouTube that will guide you on how to fix this yourself! DO NOT let Apple charge you hundreds of dollars to fix a simple problem!

Congratulations!

When both the Keyboard & Trackpad fail at the same time on the MBPro (2015) model, the Trackpad Cable is the most likely part causing the problem because the cable becomes damaged after a few years of use since the cable rubs against the frame and bottom case. On some of our organization's 2015 MBPros the cause was actually a bad Trackpad and on another a bad Logic Board so it is not a guarantee, but like you saw installing a $20 part is a great first step.
