Every time I call someone, they say that they "echo." Every single time, and they all use different phones. I have a brand new iPhone 4, and I'm not sure if there is a way to fix this.

Having the exact same problem. I hear everyone fine, but they all get their voice repeated to them about half a second after speaking. Very frustrating. Have an appointment back at the store tomorrow to try and resolve. They did suggest a replacement so will see what happens and post details.
I am having the exact same problem. Everyone seems to hear an echo when they call, however I hear nothing on my end. This is happening on every call as far as I know. Strangely, this problem seems to have kicked in randomly; I've had my iPhone 4 since release (exchanged it once within first week) but the problem seems to have begun about 2-3 weeks ago. Really not sure what coincides with that timeline. I didn't update to 4.0.2 yet. Has anyone else on this forum done a full restore and had success? Has anyone seen a change in echo with the software update?
Temporary fix is to use the headset that came with my phone. I already hate that I had to add a bumper, but now a headset? Sounds like my iPhone is going back for exchange number two.

Hi all, I'm guessing the phone uses the audio from the secondary mic to attempt to exclude background noise from the conversation. In my case, a cheap case I was using while waiting for the bumper was partially occluding the secondary mic aperture, probably causing some sort of unwanted acoustic feedback loop, which in turn completely confused the noise-cancelling algorithm in the iPhone 4 and caused the echo. So... try removing the case if you have one and see if that makes a difference - in my case, it completely solved the problem.
Ok, finally broke down and went to the apple store. They did a restore on itunes and that actually did help some but didnt eliminate it. So they ended up replacing it free of charge. I suggest anyone with this problem do the same cause I'm loving my iphone 4 now that it works flawlessly!
Enjoy this bit of irony: my bumper seems to be causing, or at least exacerbating, the echo. I've removed it and noticed a substantial difference over the past few days.
I face the same problem with my brand new iPhone 4. While calling, other party cannot hear me as if I am talking from a far distance. However, the phone works fine with speaker and headphones. Also, the speaker makes a noise and the voice is not clear enough.
My iPhone 4 is now useless although all other functions work perfectly.
Apple, what to do now since there is no Apple store in my country as I bought my device from UK.
Thank you,

Problem Solved, 3 Solutions:
1. Place your finger over the mic hole near the earphone jack hole.
2. Turn the volume down on the phone to whoever you are talking to.
3. Apple will fix this on a future update prolly using noise cancelling features like the bose headphones...just a guess.

I have the same problem with every single call that's not on speaker or headphones.
Seems like it's a common problem with some iPhones. Going down to replace the phone tomorrow unfortunately there is a 3 weeks waiting list for a new phone, don't hope Apple let me wait that long!

My iPhone was replaced by Apple and the new one works perfectly. I am now a happy iPone user.
This is interesting. I used to get this complaint all the time with my 3G. A test call to my landline would confirm the echo. It did not happen ever time but more like half. Using a headset eliminated the problem. I have not heard a complaint since switching to the iPhone 4.
Either way, apple never acknowledge the problem in the past that I can recall and Att will blame it on Apple so guess you are all still on your own

Hi everybody,
I'm also experiencing this sad issue with my iPhone. I tried several solutions but none of them worked. People at the other end always get an echo of their voice.
Solutions I tried but didn't worked:
* Reboot / Reset network settings
* Lower the volume
* Cover the top mic with a finger
* New microsim card
It seems the echo is not present while using the Apple headset.
Does anyone know if 4.1 iOS update will solve the issue ?
I don't want to return my phone (which works perfectly except the echo)
Cheers,
Tristan from Belgium.

iOS 4.1 doesn't seem to solve the Echo problem. I think I have to return the phone to the shop ...
Very bad ...

Ditto, 4.1 didn't solve the echo problem for me either...
So, for your information, I've returned my phone to the shop (not an Apple Store, as they are not yet present in my country). Have now to wait 3 weeks before getting it back.
I'm soooo disappointed ...

Even though you obviously have knowledge regarding this I think you are underestimating the general user on this topic. I have never had this echo problem before, but with my new IPHONE4 I get complaints all the time disregarding my posistion when making the call. This is not a general telecom issue, it is an IPHONE4 problem, and I am very surprised there is no word from apple yet. I went to the dealer to hand in mine today.
