How to get rid of ".HEIC" file format and just export as JPG when exporting with Airdrop?

I'm on Mohave. I wonder if anyone has any new solutions? I started using Airdrop and found this unique, ridiculously annoying file format that is unrelated to anything in the the photography universe. The HEIC files are twice as big as JPG, so I cannot for the life of me figure out the advantage. I use GraphicConverter to just grab them and turn them into JPGs, which end up being about 1/2 the size as the HEICs.... I'm lucky GC recognizes the format. Thanks!

Try the instructions from here https://petapixel.com/2017/09/25/make-iphone-shoot-jpegs-ios-11/ Alternatively you can use iMazing HEIC Converter which is available as a free App on the Apple App Store

The HEIC format is for LIVE images which contain audio and video, in so they often contain far more information and are better quality.

That's why they are often twice the size of a JPG which is a single still image.

Thanks! As a follow up, I have to ask since after conversion to JPG (without compression and same resolution), the files are about 1/2 the size of HEIC. So what is the "advantage," since it certainly doesn't appear to be size...?

This is actually a camera setting and can be changed in Settings>Camera>Formats - Most Compatible
