What would cause me to lose service on my iPhone 6s and require the IMEI number to be changed?

Lost service on my iPhone 6s. Just dropped out. ATT said the IMEI number had to be updated. What would cause this to happen and require the number change? It is now working since the updated number. First time this has happened since I got the phone 2 years ago.

iPhone 6s, iOS 13

You are right. I called AT&T and they helped me by updating the IMEI but they didn't say why that would happen in the first place. It never happened before and I wondered what the cause might be. It's working fine now so that is what is most important. Just wanted to see if there was a particular reason it would happen in the first place.

Thanks for your feedback though. It was an AT&T issue.
