What do you do if you don't know your apple ID password and the phone won't let you go past that to change your password?

What do you do if you don't know your apple ID password and the phone won't let you go past that to change your password? My dad goes to settings and then his name and then password & security and then it ask him his Apple ID password but he can't remember it. It won't let him go any further than that.
