A small white rectangle on my desktop

I was looking for an extension to open a publisher file on my Mac and there were all kinds of ads including Mac sweeper . I didn't download any but I think i tried to download an extension from the Microsoft pages. Since then the small white rectangle on my desktop. I use the browser 'Ecosia' and Chrome mostly. I read on another thread that this might mean I have some malware. How can I check on a Macbook bought in 2019? Many thanks.
