Catalina 10.15.6 time machine backup failure

I just set up a new 27” IMac Retina 5K 2020 and all is well except Time Machine.

I get repeated errors stating that I am attempting to back up any encrypted disk (the T2 chip, I assume) to an unencrypted disk, a 1 TB USB Seagate Backup Plus that worked well in he past, is formatted GUID Partition Map, and I don’t need to encrypt. I also get cryptic errors stating “files could not be backed up.” Duh.

I understand that a lot of people are having these problems but I don’t see a solution.

I am willing to abandon Time Machine for a better software solution.

Help, please, and thanks in advance.

Failed again! Time for a new drive.

Yes, you can suspect the drive is failing.

"Time Machine has completed a new backup for you, or get a message saying it can't create the backup,"

or

"fails to complete a backup."

This message reappears most likely the TimeMachine disk is operating in a state of failure and will continue to fail with increasing frequency.

The solution would be to replace the drive.

I may have stumbled onto a solution, however.

I unmounted my back disk, renamed it, remounted it, and we’re off to the races! 15 GB backed up so far; never made it past 3 before.

Renaming the drive in effect is starting a new TM backup.
