After loading Catalina Time Machine fails to backup, says two disks labeled Macintosh HD. Disk Utility shows: Macintosh HD and Macintosh HD - Data. Using a Western Digital drive to backup. How do I fix this problem?
The Macintosh HD disc is a read only disk with the system on it. It's part of the new security setup in Catalina. The Macintosh HD-Data volume is your operating volume with your apps and files on it. That would be the one to have backed up.

Old Toad -- Thanks for the reply. When I need to use the restore function provided by Time Machine the need is for both the operating system and as you point out apps and files. That is what was available in previous versions. The question is what is provided by the restore function of Time Machine with Catalina?
I don't have the Macintosh HD volume showing on the Desktop or in TM. But TM is also backing up both volumes:
