That was what I had been doing without success. However I was able to successfully update the phone when I used the USB ports on my HDMI hub instead of the ones on the Macbook Pro. Might have been a bandwidth problem with USB on the 2013 Mac.
I was finally able to resolve the issue by using USB from my HDMI hub rather than the ports on the Macbook Pro itself. Perhaps it was a bandwidth issue with those ports on the 2013 Macbook.
