Due to updates, I now have two Macintosh HD. Time machine has been unable to save back ups. What can I do to get the back up to save again? Before I rename one of them I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

There you go. You may want to delete that partition: Partition a physical disk in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support.
For now you can just rename it, and (optionally) exclude it from being backed up. At present it's not doing anything other than preventing TM from working.
Definitely open them and find out what they contain. The difference between the two may be obvious.

Are you unable to rename one of them as the dialog suggests?
I am able to rename it, but was cautious. Maybe overthinking this. I just wanted a second opinion.
I did that, one has all the Applications etc files and the other is empty.
