Character palette has become too bashful

My character palette has taken to appearing for only a couple of seconds when summoned, and then only as an empty frame. I have to then “hide” it or it does this whenever I click on the desktop. Trashing the four “com.apple.IntlDataCache.le . . .” files had no effect.

I found no "character palette" files in my computer till I reached “HD/System/Library/Components” file, where there's a “CharacterPalette.component” file of about 13 MB. Could this file be corrupted and could downloading a new one from somewhere restore the character palette?

Hi Keith, I kind of doubt it's that file, you can't download it per se, but it Likely could be extracted from your Install Disc, (possibly the big 10.4.11 Update too), using Pacifist...

My bet would be one or all of these...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these files to the Desktop, then Trash the original of the last one(s).

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/ByHost/Users/YourUserName/Library/Prefer ences/com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist

/Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist

/com.apple.HIToolbox.<12digitHex#>.plist

There may be more than one of the last one above.

You may need to check show it in the Menubar again.
