Prohibit Sign

I got a Macbook pro from someone but the hard Drive was gone so i installed a new hard drive with macos on it but it keeps giving me the prohibit sign even after doing mac recovery from online. it won't let me get to disk utility to try and repair the disk.

Tried to reinstall Mojave, but got an error that the disk (an external hard drive) doesn’t use the GUID partition table scheme. Only thing I could find was to erase/format the disk, but it is full of photos, so my wife disconnected it. Now no disk is showing, and I’m at a loss as to what to do now. Is there a way to select a different disk, the ssd perhaps? This is my wife’s mac, and I’m not sure if she has backed it up to perform a restore with time machine.

My MacBook Pro has the Prohibitory Symbol and I cannot install anything to my hard drive My MacBook PRO 13; Version:OS X 10.11.6 - has the Prohibitory Symbol and I cannot install anything to my hard drive. My Hard Drive dissappears when I ask to re-install the boot sequence. Can I download the information I need online and re-boot my computer without loosing data? [Edited by Moderator]

I used Disk Utility to reinstall macOS but the version that it has given me now gives me the prohibitory symbol upon power up. I have for awhile been flirting with a laptop that was too full and every time delete enough files to be able to download the update file. When the laptop went through a restart cycle in then decided to try to install the new OS but lo and behold, it now said there was not enough room to unpack the update and I got stuck in a cycle of not being able to log in because it kept trying to install an update it didnt have room to do so. So I held command R on start up and did an the Disk Utility repair that came back with no errors, and then also reinstalled the OS, but now upon book i up I get the prohibitory symbol instead.

Maybe the version of macOS on the new drive cannot boot that Mac.

The prohibitory symbol means the system cannot boot from that startup disk.
