Can I use 2 monitors w/ my MacBook HDMI port?

Hi all, I have a MacBook Pro running El Capitan OS X. I want to run two external monitors off of the one HDMI port it has--is this possible? I do have a thunderbolt port, but it's occupied by a digital audio workstation, so I can't use this.

I bought a 1x2 HDMI splitter and plugged both monitors into it but was only able to get one external monitor to appear in my MacBook's "Displays"; the splitter basically split the screen between my laptop screen and the one external monitor :(

Can anyone tell me what kind of adapter will allow me to run 2 external monitors off the one HDMI port? Or if this is even possible?

Thanks so much!

Sondra
