Bootcamp for 2020 iMac?

Trying to run bootcamp on my new 2020 iMac. After a bit of faffing around with boot security I can get into windows using my external drive with windows on it (from my last iMac), but the boot camp drivers do not install (install app hangs immediately). I have basic functionality, but no sound, bluetooth etc.... Is it not compatible yet?

  • YouTube videos seldom specify year/model of Macs and are not universal solutions.
  • A 5-minute video may take you several hours.
  • Standard installation of Bootcamp/Windows should be used.
  • External disks are not supported, despite all such video clips. YMMV.
  • Be aware of enabling external boot, which is also considered insecure, especially if the Mac will be used in public places.

  • On your internal drive, only install the Windows OS, nothing else.
  • Format/configure your external disk as NTFS, connect as D: (or any drive letter that Windows assigns).
  • Install all your external software on D:, leaving C: as the minimal Windows.
  • If you need to repair Windows, you can just remove/re-install on the internal drive, as necessary.

Windows drivers are model-specific. They are not portable across models. If you need to move Windows between different hardware, the supported method is to run SysPrep and 'generalize' Windows on the 'source', and then install the correct drivers on the 'destination' Mac. The drivers for either Mac are available via Bootcamp Assistant -> Action -> Download.

Thanks for the info. I understand the drivers are specific. When I got into windows (on the new Mac) I deleted all the old drivers, rebooted and got the latest windows updates so I have minimal functionality. I did then download the latest drivers from apple in boot camp assistant. The issue is that the installer hangs on the windows side which I've not seen before. I re-downloaded and tried again, but same result. What I'm not clear on is: Is Bootcamp supposed to work on the 2020 iMac or is it not ready? I've not heard of Sysprep before (I'll google it), but is that a special requirement beyond the driver cleanup I already did? all my non-GPU software works, just no sound or bluetooth. I'll use the BCD GPU drivers once I get the base stuff working.

I'd be curious what magic people have done to get it working.

I started from scratch reformatting the drive, and with fresh downloads of the Win image from MS, and even bought a new key from MS directly. I used WintoUSB to put the windows image on my external T5 (hooked up via USB c). Everything booted up, and was able to fully update windows and..... the bootcamp installer still hangs just as it did before. So I can run windows fine, but not install any apple drivers for bluetooth, sound, mic, video etc... So clearly me using my old windows image and deleting off the older drivers wasn't the problem; something broken in the installer looks like. If I try to update drivers then point them at the bootcamp drivers folder, those don't work either. Signing issue maybe? (i'm writing this from bootcamp windows/Chrome)

The BC drivers installer is a peculiar piece. Instead of using the global setup.exe in Bootcamp folder, are you able to install individual drivers manually?

I understand your points and I know those risks. Issue is, I wanna play Microsoft Flight I'm, but I don't wanna make a partition. This is primarily a work computer for my own home business. I just wanna be able pop in a drive and play.

Also everything worked except for network drivers. I've done it already, just the drivers aren't great, which seems to be a common issue with Bootcamp.

Do you have another Windows PC and/or Mac?

External storage is connected via USB2/USB3/TB/USBc. Internal disks are SATA/PCIe/NVMe. It is much safer to use the internal disk, if you can. I understand your predicament.

Many of the devices show as unknown and any attempt to install drivers just hangs up. Ended up reformatting the external T5 in NTFS and just doing an internal bootcamp (which works fine) and using the external SSD for app/data storage, but I don't really have enough internal SSD. Really hoping to be able to run purely from external SSD, as I don't want windows stuff gunking up my mac, but still need bootcamp

Hello, i had the same problem, after installing bootcamp, go to the windows icon in the desktop, right click, devices (i don´t remember the exact name), then you are going to see all the drivers, some of them are with an exclamation icon, right click on them, then click on update, manual update, and select the windows support folder, it is going to recognize all the drivers that have the exclamation icon, the one that i couldn´t install is the bluetooth, i think that because is a 5.0 bluetooth is not supported yet, stay toon for updates in the apple updater (:
