apple mail heating up my macbook pro

I'm using Apple Mail on a MacBook Pro 16inch with Catalina 10.15.5.

After some minutes of working with Apple Mail the application is heavily in action using up to 90% of the CPU power. In consequence the fan is starting to work and the laptop is heading up dramatically. The only chance to stop the process of further heating up and loud fans is to quit Mail or to turn of WiFi. Both uncomfortable and unsatisfying.

I recognized that Apple Mail is behaving strange because it seems to connect constantly to the server for new mails although the Activity window shows 'No new messages'.

I've tried to delete all unused messages and I used >Mailbox>Rebuild, both without any positive effect.

Not knowing how to proceed with that problem I'm looking out for help.

Thank you in advance for sometbody being able to help me

Matthias

Hi Teddy,

thank you for your response and your help. Reading your text it came to my head that I could try to take the different accounts offline to check if one of them causes the problem. And yes, I do have one Microsoft Exchange Account from my company. After I put this one offline the problem disappeared. So in a way you solved my problem that I was carrying since months.

Thank you for that

All the best

Hi matthias167,

We see you're having some trouble using Mail on your MacBook Pro running macOS Catalina 10.15.5. Not to worry, we're here to help work with you to get this resolved!

To start, can you confirm the model MacBook Pro you're using? Do you notice any other applications causing it to warm up like this? Are you using multiple email accounts with Mail? If so, do you know if they're POP3 or IMAP?

We'd also like to test this issue in safe mode to see if it occurs there. We want to test in safe mode as we want to see if there is a possible startup program or settings conflict causing the heat up. This article goes over how to start up in safe mode: How to use safe mode on your Mac

We'd also like to have you reset the SMC settings, just to ensure we cover all the bases. Resetting the SMC shouldn't affect any of your content but it does help to revert some settings that are tied to your power, including your fans. Find the steps for your MacBook Pro here: How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Let us know the results of that, along with the model MacBook Pro you're using, and we'll take it from there.

All the best.
