Old iPhone is asking for Apple ID password

My wife wants to give her old iPhone 5 to her friend & I have cleared as much off it as I can but it is asking for her Apple ID password which she can not remember! I have tried over 48 combinations in the last week & keep getting locked out !

We are both in our 70s so this is a mammoth task for me can anyone point me in the right direction ?

Thanks

Ray

If she recovers the password, have her do the steps in the article below before giving away the phone.

Set up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

If necessary, if she is the original owner, have her contact Apple. Apple can remove the Activation Lock if provided the required paperwork. Either take the device, the original purchase receipt with the serial number, and a photo ID to the nearest Apple Store (if it has reopened)

I think you will need to request account recovery. I don' think you are going to get anywhere otherwise. The steps below may seem complex, but near the bottom, they will give you a chance to enter account recovery.

See If your Apple ID is locked or disabled https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204106 "If you or someone else enters your password, security questions, or other account information incorrectly too many times, your Apple ID automatically locks to protect your security and you can't sign in to any Apple services.

If you use two-factor authentication, you need a trusted device or trusted phone number to reset your Apple ID password and unlock your account. If you have a recovery key, you can also use it to help you regain access to your account. …

If you use security questions with your Apple ID, or if you don't have access to a trusted device or phone number, go to iforgot.apple.com. Then you can unlock your account with your existing password or reset your password. After multiple unsuccessful attempts to unlock your account, your Apple ID will remain locked and you can try again the next day.” Eventually you will be able to enter account recovery. If you can’t sign in, reset your password, or receive verification codes, you can request account recovery to regain access to your account.

Thus, see Recover your Apple ID when you can’t reset your password https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204921Read the whole document carefully.
