can't access library on my passport for Mac with MacBook Air

attempting to access photos my passport for Mac via MacBook Air that are backups from my iMac, and but no photos are showing when I select the library. I've attempted with several of the dated backups, but no photos. went to the WD my passport for Mac icon, double clicked, went to backups, then go, then pictures, the file that comes up is the most recent photos library.photoslibrary backup (5.4MB), I double click on it, goes to the iPhoto app, says updating, then stops with no pictures displayed.

If the Passport is used for Time Machine then enter Time Machine,

go back to a date when you know you had a good library and restore it to your Pictures folder. Open and see if you have your photos back.
