When you startup your Mac hold down the ALT/OPTION key to engage the select Startup Disk window.
Are you using a wired USB Keyboard & holding Option key at power up?
Likely the Hard Drive has died, see if you can get someone to install OSX on an external drive for you.

None of the key combinations take me to anything useful.
i wind up at a screen with a folder and question mark, circle with a lightning bolt or internet recovery. At no time are any bootable disks or usb drives displayed.
internet recovery doesn’t work because my wi-fi isn’t being discovered.

All boot key combinations result in one of three screens: folder with question mark, circle with lightning bolt or internet recovery that can’t find my wi-fi network.
