I got my airpods just about 6 months ago and the right one barely has any sound out of it. It doesn't sound muffled, just quiet. I have already tried resetting them and don't believe that is the issue. how could I get them exchanged for a working pair?

If the balance seems to be off, try this:
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual and scroll down to “Balance L vs R” (Adjust the audio volume balance) and make changes.
